The Basics of How a Heating and Air Conditioning System Works

When looking for a heating and air conditioning system (HVAC) in Chico, it’s a good idea to be familiar with the different types out there and understand the basics of how they work.
HVAC stands for heating, ventilation and air conditioning, with most modern homes and buildings using a central unit that combines all three systems. A central HVAC system is the most quiet and convenient way to cool an entire home or building.
Many central heating and air conditioning systems are split systems that use a condenser in an outdoor unit and a separate evaporator coil in an indoor unit. An HVAC system either warms or cools/dehumidifies air that flows through a series of tubes called ducts. This air is distributed to all the rooms of your house. In warmer weather, the system transfers heat from indoors to outside, while the cooled indoor air is re-circulated throughout your home through those ducts.
Your air conditioner will also dehumidify your home. Extra moisture from saturated warm air condenses and beads on the evaporator coils and is carried away through a drain. The process is similar to moisture beading on your glass of cold ice tea on a hot day.
Benefits of a central heating and air conditioning system
Easy to Maintain - HVAC systems require routine maintenance and will cause them to last for many years.
Quiet Operation - Indoor units are typically quiet enough for bedrooms and libraries.
Big Savings - Central heating and air conditioning systems work well in situations where rooms only need to be cooled at specific times. This can save energy and reduce not just your utility bills, but your maintenance costs.
Easy to Control - Most units come with an easy-to-control, wall-mounted thermostat, making temperature control easy and convenient.
Comfort - a central heating and air conditioning system is essential to provide optimum comfort in your home for all members of the family.
More about heating and air conditioning systems
Some homes have a separate air conditioner such as a traditional split system or an air conditioner mounted into a rectangular hole in the wall or a window.
The split system provides a compressor unit outside the building connected to a small air conditioning and furnace unit with evaporator coil inside. This unit converts refrigerant and circulates air throughout the ducts in your home. This system can help with noise control from both the air conditioner and from outside noise.
The mounted wall or window air conditioner may be the least expensive to install, but leakage of heat can occur around the edges in the wintertime. Noise levels can also rise from both the air conditioner and from outside noise since the unit does not provide any noise insulation.
A ductless single mini-split system
There are also split systems for ductless homes. These are ideal for one-room spaces in both renovations and new construction projects. They combine a compact outdoor unit with a quiet, space-saving indoor unit - usually against a wall or from the ceiling - in a multitude of designs, styles and capacities.
A ductless multi-split system
These operate the same as mini-split systems, but with multiple indoor units and coupled with a single outdoor unit for ultimate control and comfort.
