State-mandated water reductions to cut Butte County residents’ water use
Gov. Jerry Brown mandated a 25 percent water reduction in California, but what that means won’t be clear until the state water board sets the rules in May.
To enact the governor’s order to use 25 percent less water than 2013 levels, the State Water Resources Control Board will adopt emergency water regulations at its May 5 board meeting, said board spokesperson George Kostyrko. Before the board’s vote, there will be a 10-day public review period.
Kostyrko said the state is in a very serious situation and conservation is the best way to stretch resources.
“We’re asking residents to be very sensitive to the fact we are in the fourth year of a drought,” he said.
Kostyrko noted outdoor water use accounts for between 50 to 80 percent of urban water consumption. The state should be able to meet the 25 percent reduction goal if people limit watering their lawns to once per week and limit watering of trees and bushes.

In addition to limiting the watering of your lawn, trees and bushes, there are things you and your family can start doing right away to help conserve water.
Start implementing the following tips around your home:
- Adjust your watering schedule based on the changing weather conditions
- If you’re in the market for a new washing machine, purchase a high-efficiency model – it uses 35-50% less water!
- Only run the dishwasher when you have a full load
- Install a faucet aerator to reduce water use to 1 gallon per minute. Don’t have one? Cal Water will send it to customers at no charge as part of its conservation kits.
- Shorten your shower – every minute can save up to 75 gallons per month.
- Don’t leave the water running when you’re brushing your teeth. Turning it off can save 70 gallons per month.
- If your car needs a bath, consider taking it to a car wash that recycles its water instead of washing it in your driveway. A hose used to wash your car can use 10 gallons of water per minute.
- A faucet that drips just five times a minute may be wasting more than 200 gallons a year!
